We stuck around for spring break.
Having just moved here, we thought we'd see some of the state we came to!
The first day we was kind of a "visit work" day.
We went to see Jessi at the diamond and jewelry store she works at. We got a little tour of the process of making a ring, and Cody sat and talked rocks and minerals with the store owner and his new book on the subject :)
Then we headed over to see Ben. He gave us a tour and we met the owner and his coworkers.
It's not too far from the Ogden Temple and Farr's Ice Cream and I promised them a treat.
We watched the indoor sky diving team and got a tour of the gym in Ogden then headed to Costco.
Why is shopping with older kids SO MUCH HARDER than the littlest?
Mentally gearing up for summer...
Before ice cream we stopped at the temple.
Macey literally had me take a picture of each flower. Here's a general overview---
Our last stake president told the kids to "touch the temple." I don't know if that was a church wide thing or just that stake, but the kids really wanted to.
Mackayla's pose:)
Our activities with Becky and Micah were a little outside of the box the next day, which was perfect for me!
Behold, the Spiral Jetty:
It's out there - the middle of nowhere/"no service"
Us and the cows were out this way
Of course we walked around the actual lake. It's pretty shallow for a ways
The kids got creative with some clay they found
It's amazing what they find to do with a little space
On the way back we stopped at the Golden Spike National Monument, because it was literally on the way and in the middle of nowhere and I don't guess we'll stop by it again any time soon.
Plus Cody had learned about it this year in school. Educational!
We watched a little movie about it (I totally fell asleep and everyone was laughing at me but I'm sure it was good), and we drove on one of the steep trails they made for the train tracks. Pretty impressive what they did with hand shovels and wood.
Baby Animal Days in Logan was the next day!!
We got right in to see the adorable baby bears.
But everything else had a little line.
Panning for gold:
Cody was determined to find some and finally did while the girls went and looked at the dogs
Then we held bunnies
and baby turtles
and baby chicks
and pet a lot of other cute babies, too.
While we ate lunch we watched a sheep shearing demonstration
Thursday is Ben's day off
We went and rode horses with our cousins.
There's a lot of prep work with it!
Then we rode the side by side.
We'll have to try again sometime because the mountain road we wanted to take was closed. Winter...sigh.
Friday was another day of pure randomness. My sister really wanted to go see the Saltair.
It was a big disappointment for her I think, haha!
Back in the day it was a super cool building and attracted a ton of visitors. Now it's a nasty unkept building where a few low budget concerts are held. The original building was burned down, restored, burned down, kind of restored, then flooded. And this is a sorry attempt at bringing it back. I think it was just doomed to failure.
We stopped for a proof-of-stopping picture.
Then headed past to the Great Salt Lake Park and visitor's center.
The kids became junior rangers and Great Salt Lake experts. Jealous?
4 billion tons of salt has collected in the lake over thousands of years.
The ocean is 3.5% salt and the Great Salt Lake is 6-25% salt.
Black Rock.
Sea foam and salt from the lake
That little building out there and the huge pile of white is the
Morton Salt Factory and a huge pile of salt.
Next time you grab your salt for cooking you'll know where it's from :)
There are miles and miles of salt pools where they are evaporating the water and collecting salt.
Meanwhile, the weather can't decide if it wants spring or winter.
I know which one I would pick,
but apparently we would have had to stay in California for summer all year.
The tulips are so pretty in spring.
It's been a really rainy spring. I'm super sick of the rain, especially since it was a rainy winter in California too,
but the views never get old!
