If you would have asked me a year ago what calling I never wanted in church I would have said scouts, and now that I've been doing it, I realize that it's not bad at all.
I'm not going to call myself a scouting enthusiast, and have no desire to grow a mullet and preach about world conservation, but I think I get it now - it's about giving boys confidence to accomplish things and learn skills that boys are interested in. The boys really do have fun doing it, which is the best part.
The Pinewood Derby is the most anticipated event of the year. All the boys get a block of wood to make into a car.
We have a bunch of insanely talented people who put the night together and a great group of boys. We combine two wards for scouts.
All the computer tech stuff is by the man at the computer, as well as the track, all the official times to the millisecond, and instant replay on a big screen. I have no idea how it happens, I just know he's really smart and it's really cool to watch.
I also really love watching the boys' expressions during their heat's race.
The coordination of the event is no small feat either. We went and helped set up that day, but most of the work had gone into play long before that. I had nothing to do with that, but our leader is on the ball.
Nacho Bar:
Cody and Ben worked on their car a lot and all their work paid off
(I really did have a picture with Ben in it working with Cody on the car, and I was excited about it, but it got swallowed in the abyss of unrecoverable pictures. He was even actually wearing a shirt instead of his "white" shirt:p. Man! )
Cody spent a lot of time spinning the wheels!
He got first place in our ward!
The winner in this ward wins every year! His dad is the one who owns the track and everything and they definitely have this down to a science.
This was one exciting night for our house:)!
